Juice is a darkly comic novel, set in the world of door to door sales in Leeds. Paul’s conservative life is toppled when he knocks on his first door, and enters the beguiling and surreal domain of World Sales Corp. Mastering the steps to success and hustling his territory, Paul seems to be on the road to wealth and happiness, until a charismatic newcomer draws him into a potentially deadly rivalry.

Dean Davey is a character in the book, though it would crush him if he found out, so I would appreciate it if you didn’t make reference to it on the forums. I don’t let him onto this page, so this is the only place we can talk freely. Likewise, Dr Elastine is also apocryphal, though he is very willing to answer your questions in the Juice Bar. Perhaps other characters will drop in from time to time. Who knows, as they’re very busy: to them, the daily grind of door to door sales is time consuming and all too real.

As Dean says, the book isn’t published yet. Agents and publishers are always welcome to get in touch. I have email, so there’s no need to form an orderly queue. Please send any enquiries to
phil@juicebythat.com.

If you like these, you should check out www.wordle.net. Try making some poetry word clouds - Binsey Poplars by Gerard Manley Hopkins works really well.

What other people say
The following snippets are taken from the review site YouWriteOn.com:

"I feel like I've just followed a brightly-coloured bouncing ball along a sunny street."

"It reminds me slightly of ’When We Came to the End’ by Joshua Ferris"

"Unfortunately, funny books often have caricatures instead of people, which I think spoils the enjoyment. Juice, thank goodness, is about real people."

"Fast moving, funny, interesting - all these things are true of Juice."

"I never thought I'd be so enthralled by an account of a couple of blokes knocking on doors.
This is a marvellous story by a gifted writer."

About the author
I like the usual things. Malt loaf. The Smiths. The villages and forests of Moravia. Sometimes life really is that simple. I'm married to the most amazing woman, and run happily ragged by two Austin Powers obsessed children.

I also have cystic fibrosis. I don't mention this because it is relevant or exciting, but because it seems wasteful to pass up an opportunity to publicise the fantastic work of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust:
